How to: Control Lawn Weeds in Sir Walter Lawns

There’s nothing worse than spending hundreds of dollars maintaining your lawn only for a few persistent lawn weeds continually taking hold when you turn your back. The key is to control a lawn weed infestation from the outset rather than letting it get out of hand. A healthy, well-maintained lawn will more often than not keep the weeds at bay. But occasionally, when mother nature has her way, drought, frosts and other sub-optimal growing conditions can take their toll on even the most well manicured green top.

Some buffalo lawn species, such as Sir Walter DNA Certified Turf, are naturally more weed and pest resistant. They have a dense thatch which suffocates out competing weeds. If they do manage to find their way through, the best treatment may be simply a heavy fertilisation and a good mow.  If a more heavy duty approach is required, you may need to reach for a herbicide.

Lawn weed herbicides

There are many herbicides available, including some non-selective products which kill almost anything it touches. These products, such as Round-up, Zero or other Glysophate based products are not suitable for use within any established lawn including Sir Walter.

For application on Sir Walter DNA Certified lawns as well as other brands of Buffalo, a selective herbicide with the active constituents of Bromoxynil and MCPA will be required. Do not use just any off the shelf lawn weed herbicide, as general products with active constituents of Bentazone, Mecoprop or Dicamba are designed for couch type lawns and are not suitable.

When it comes to the pesky Nutgrass weed or Cyperus rotundas, Sempra is one of the few products on the market that will get the job done effectively. Sempra selectively targets Nutgrass in all lawn species, including Buffalos such as Sir Walter.
