Paver Preparation & Sealer Application: Protecting Your Investment

Paver Preparation and Sealer Application

Before you begin the process of applying sealant, it important to ensure sufficient paver preparation is in place. If the pavers are newly laid, it’s crucial to allow sufficient time for them to completely dry out. Many concrete pavers are made to order and are delivered within a 10-day period. However, concrete takes up to 28 days to cure, so it’s advisable to wait until this curing period is over before applying the sealant. During this time, it’s essential to take extra care as the pavers are most vulnerable in their unsealed state. Clean up any dirt, leaves, and footprints promptly to ensure the pavers are in excellent condition before moving on to the sealer application stage.

Once the pavers have fully dried out, they will likely require a light cleaning. There are various paver cleaners available in the market, including alkali-based, chlorine-based, and highly acidic cleaners like Hydrochloric Acid. However, it’s crucial to note that pavers preparation and cleaning should NEVER involve hydrochloric acid. Not only does it have the potential to damage the decorative surface of the pavers, but its use can also void the warranties offered by both the paver manufacturer and the sealant manufacturer. Instead, opt for a heavy duty alkali cleaner for a light cleaning. After cleaning, allow the pavers to fully dry out for a day or so. If you encounter more severe or specific staining, consult with our sales team who can recommend the appropriate product to use.

Regardless of the type of sealant you choose, it’s recommended to apply it with a lambs wool applicator or, for detailed areas, a brush. Avoid using a paint roller, as it can apply the sealant too thickly and push it around the area. A lambs wool applicator ensures even distribution during the sealer application process and allows the pavers to absorb the sealant effectively.

Before applying the sealant to the entire area, it’s essential to conduct a test on a leftover paver or an inconspicuous area. Once you are satisfied with the results, you can proceed to seal the entire area. Most sealants require a minimum of two coats, which is generally accounted for in the coverage estimates. As a general rule, you can expect to cover 4-5m2 per liter of sealant with two coats, depending on the porosity of the surface. The majority of sealants have a re-coat time of approximately 8 hours. It’s advisable to avoid sealing during the hottest part of the day, on rainy days, or when the surface temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius. The best time for application is on a dry day, preferably in the morning when the temperature is cool and the area is shaded. The second coat can be applied either at the end of the day or the following morning.

Tools Required:

  • Surface cleaner suitable for the type and severity of soiling
  • Lambs Wool Applicator
  • Chosen sealant
  • Paint tray (sized appropriately for the applicator)
  • Brush for detailed areas
  • Solvent for cleanup

In most cases, paver preparation and sealing is a straightforward process similar to painting a wall. The keys to a successful sealing job are to ensure the area is clean and free from dust, apply the sealant with the appropriate applicator, and complete at least two coats, applying each coat at a 90-degree angle to the previous coat.
