A Basic Lawn Renovation Process
Renovating your lawn might sound like a big job, but it’s really just about giving your grass the right conditions to bounce back. Follow these simple steps and you’ll have a greener, healthier lawn in no time.
Step #1
Mow low (Scalp) & clear the lawn
Start by mowing your grass nice and short. Rake up the clippings, leaves, and any built-up thatch (the spongy layer sitting above the soil). This clears the way for fresh growth.
Step #2
Loosen the soil (Aeration)
Grab a pitchfork and poke holes across the lawn about 10 cm deep. Space them every 10–15 cm. This aerates the soil so water and nutrients can reach the roots. If your lawn’s really compacted, you can hire a petrol aerator/coring machine.
Step #3
Repair bare patches with lawn seed
If you’ve got thin or bare spots, sprinkle some lawn seed that suits your grass type. Lightly rake it in and gently press it down so it makes good contact with the soil. Give it a light sprinkle with water.
Step #4
Topdress with sand or soil
Spread a layer of sandy loam or quality topdressing soil or sand (like Fairway Pro-MAXX) over the surface. This helps level the lawn, protects new seed, and improves the soil.
Step #5
Feed the lawn with fertiliser
Apply a slow-release lawn fertiliser to give your grass the nutrients it needs to recover and thicken up.
Step #6
Water well!
Water the lawn immediately, then keep the soil slightly damp while new growth establishes. Light daily watering works best for the first couple of weeks.
