March is a great time to plant a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Being the start of Autumn, the temperatures are beginning to cool after summer, and the wetter conditions make it easier to establish new plants. Here’s a guide to what you can plant this month, along with tips on how to care for them.
Vegetables to Plant
Lettuce
A fast-growing leafy green, lettuce loves the slightly cooler temperatures of autumn. Choose loose-leaf varieties for a quicker harvest, or cos and butterhead types for heartier heads. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and plant in a partly shaded spot to prevent bolting.Carrots
Carrots grow well in the mild autumn climate. Choose a well-draining, loose soil to prevent them from becoming stunted or forked. Thin seedlings to avoid overcrowding, and ensure the soil is free from large clumps or stones.Beetroot
Beetroot is easy to grow and provides both tasty roots and nutritious greens. Water consistently and harvest when the roots are about the size of a golf ball for the best flavour.Broccoli
This nutrient-rich vegetable thrives in the cooling temperatures. Protect from cabbage moths with netting and apply liquid fertiliser every two weeks for strong growth.Cauliflower
Another brassica that loves autumn’s mild temperatures. Needs consistent moisture and protection from pests. Space plants well apart to allow the heads to develop properly.Spinach
A great leafy green to plant now for continual harvests. Prefers slightly shaded areas and regular watering to prevent drying out.Onions
Planting onions now allows them to establish before winter. Keep the soil well-drained, and avoid over-fertilizing to prevent too much leafy growth.Beans (Bush and Climbing)
Beans are still a great option in March, as the warmth helps them establish before winter. Provide support for climbing varieties, water deeply, and pick regularly to encourage more pods.
Fruits to Plant in March
Strawberries
March is an excellent time to plant strawberries, as they’ll establish well before winter and produce fruit in spring. Plant in well-draining, compost-rich soil and keep them mulched to retain moisture and prevent rot.Passionfruit
This vigorous vine is perfect for warm climates and will thrive with the right care. Plant in full sun with a sturdy trellis for support, and keep the soil moist but well-drained.Blueberries
Blueberries do well in acidic soils, and autumn planting helps them establish before fruiting in spring. Use an acidic mulch like pine needles, and ensure they get plenty of sun and regular watering.Pineapple
Pineapples grow well in South East Queensland and require minimal care once established. Plant in a sunny, well-draining spot, and water occasionally during dry periods.
Herbs to Plant
Basil
Still a great herb to grow while the weather is warm. Needs full sun, regular watering, and regular picking to prevent flowering.Parsley
A hardy herb that thrives in autumn. Water consistently and grow in a partly shaded area if the weather is still warm.Coriander
Best grown in autumn to avoid bolting in the heat. Prefers a cooler, shaded position and consistent watering.Thyme
A hardy herb that can be planted now for year-round use. Requires little water and loves full sun with well-drained soil.Mint
A great herb that thrives in cooler weather but spreads aggressively. Keep it in a pot to contain its growth and water regularly.
General Gardening Jobs for March
- Re-pot and fertilise indoor plants. This will allow them to be settled before the cooler months start.
- Pick nearly mature tomatoes with a small piece of stem still attached, then let them finish ripening indoors.
- For succulents, remove the ‘pup’ (small plantlets) from the plant and allow them to dry a bit before re-planting.
- If you have any hedges, give them a final trim so they will look neat and tidy during the winter months.
