June Planting & Garden Guide

June is a great time to grow a variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs in South East Queensland. The days are starting off cooler, but still warm and very low humidity – creating ideal conditions for many winter crops. While the soil has cooled a lot since summer, it still holds enough warmth to support strong root growth. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned green thumb, here’s your guide to what you can plant this month and how to keep your garden thriving through winter.

Vegetables to Plant

  1. Broccoli

A cool-season favourite, broccoli thrives in June’s crisp air. Start with seedlings for faster results. Plant in well-drained soil enriched with compost. Keep it moist but not waterlogged. Feed with a liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks. Protect from caterpillars with netting or organic sprays.

  2. Onions

Now is the perfect time to plant bulb onions. Plant in rows in a sunny spot. Keep soil moist during germination but don’t overwater. Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser early on.

  3. Cabbage

Another brassica that grows well now, cabbage loves the cooler weather. Give them space (40–50 cm apart) and full sun. Water consistently and mulch to retain moisture. Watch for aphids and caterpillars.

  4. Turnips

Turnips are fast growers and can be used for both their roots and greens. Sow directly into the garden in a sunny spot. Water consistently and thin seedlings early to give roots room to develop.

  5. Cauliflower

Cauliflower prefers steady, cool weather and is ideal for planting now. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot. Keep soil evenly moist and rich in organic matter. It’s a hungry plant—feed regularly and avoid disturbing the roots. Tie outer leaves over the developing head to protect it from sun and pests.

  6. Silverbeet (Swiss Chard)

Hardy and colourful, silverbeet is perfect for cooler weather and adds vibrance to the garden. Plant in full sun to part shade. Water consistently and harvest leaves from the outside to encourage continued growth.

Fruits to Plant

  1. Strawberries

May still gives time to plant strawberries to produce fruit in spring. Plant in well-draining, compost-rich soil and keep them mulched to retain moisture and prevent rot.

  2. Citrus (Potted or Garden)

While not planted from seed now, June is a good time to establish young citrus trees.  Choose a warm, sheltered spot. Use quality citrus potting mix if growing in containers. Water deeply and less frequently in winter. Protect from cold snaps.

Herbs to Plant

  1. Dill

This feathery herb loves the cooler weather and is quick to grow. Plant in full sun and keep soil moist. Dill can bolt if it gets too warm, so winter is the perfect season. It attracts beneficial insects, making it great for companion planting.

  2. Oregano

A hardy herb with a strong flavour, oregano thrives with little fuss. Needs full sun and well-drained soil. Water when the top layer is dry. Trim regularly to keep it compact and promote new growth.

Garden Care Tips for June

  • Put protection into place for plants vulnerable to the cold.  Mulch your garden beds. It helps to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Feed your soil – use compost or worm castings to enrich the soil before planting.
  • Water less frequently, deeply. Do it in the mornings to reduce disease risk, as cooler weather means less evaporation.
