In Southeast Queensland we have a subtropical and/or warm temperate climate. This means January temperatures can often soar high, but so can the humidity thanks to summer storms. Careful selection of heat-tolerant plants and diligent garden care is needed to ensure your plantings will thrive.
Vegetables and Fruits recommended for planting in January:
Capsicums
Capsicums thrive in the summer heat but use a shade cloth on scorching hot days. Plant them in a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil.
Cucumbers
Cucumbers flourish in warm temperatures. Plant them in well-drained soil and provide trellis support to keep the fruits off the ground.
Eggplants
Also known as aubergines, eggplants prefer warm soil and consistent moisture. Plant in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of sun each day.
Mandarins
These citrus fruits grow well in subtropical conditions and provide a delicious, refreshing snack. Plant mandarin trees in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Keep them well-watered, especially in the summer heat.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are a versatile and popular summer crop. Plant them in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Stake or cage the plants for support and ensure they receive consistent watering.
Zucchini
Zucchini is a fast-growing vegetable that thrives in the heat. Plant it in fertile, well-drained soil and provide plenty of space for the plants to spread.
Herbs recommended for planting in January:
Basil
Basil loves the warmth and can be sown directly into the garden or in pots. It’s an essential herb for summer dishes and pairs well with tomatoes.
Lemongrass
Ideal for the subtropical climate, lemongrass is a hardy plant that thrives in the heat. Its citrusy flavour makes it a great addition to soups, teas, and stir-fries.
Garden Maintenance Tips
Soil
Make sure to select a soil that is rich in organic matter, well-draining, and has a loamy texture to support healthy root development and nutrient uptake. We offer a range of garden soils tailored for vegetable gardens, such as UltraGrow Platinum Garden Soil, designed to provide the ideal balance of nutrients and structure for your plants.
Watering
Early morning watering reduces evaporation and helps plants stay hydrated through the hottest part of the day. Consider installing drip irrigation to maintain consistent soil moisture.
Mulching
Apply mulch to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Mulch also provides organic matter to improve soil health. For best results re-apply mulch every 6 months at a minimum. For all your mulching needs, have a look at our range.
Plant Food & Fertiliser
We recommend using the UltraGrow range of liquid plant food, fertilisers and biostimulants for a well-rounded produce program.
Dyna-Maxx, Sonic Bloom and Pure Kelp are all perfect for use in the veggie garden and will assist in overall plant health as well as improving your harvest.
