A beautiful garden is often a big tick on a homeowners wish list, but not everyone is blessed with a large backyard (or even a courtyard, if you have an apartment). This means a lot of gardening enthusiasts have had to get creative with indoor gardening ideas, to breathe some life into their interior design. While buying a bunch of succulent house plants is always a quick and easy way to spice up the living room, there are plenty of creative ways you can incorporate indoor gardening into your home that don’t require a green thumb.
We take a look at some creative indoor gardening ideas to get you started on curating your ultimate dream indoor garden.
Indoor gardening tips
When it comes to indoor gardening ideas, none are quite as cute and eclectic as a glass plant terrarium. Guaranteed to immediately capture the interest of every person who enters your home, a glass terrarium can be as simple as a single dome filled with greenery or as extravagant as a large, hexagonal dome filled with moss, decorative pebbles and even a Bonsai tree. You can purchase ready made terrariums and DIY kits or use your imagination and create one entirely yourself. Closed terrariums are the easiest form of terrariums to look after, as they typically just require watering and checking for mould. Open terrariums require a little more TLC and will need frequent watering and pruning to keep your plants neat and tidy.
Windowsill herb garden
If you have a window in your kitchen, why not take advantage of the sunshine by creating your very own herb garden? Both functional and pretty to look at, a miniature herb garden gives you the option to grow herbs and spices a mere arms reach away from where you cook (bonus points if you have a window directly above your sink!) Herbs such as basil, parsley, rosemary, and thyme are always good indoor gardening options, and you can even add in some nice tomato and chilli plants if you have the window space.
Vertical tree plant ladder
If you don’t have a lot of floor space for your indoor gardening, a vertical tree plant ladder is a wonderful way to take up little room and allow plants better access to sunlight. You can purchase small ladders specifically made for tree display, or even use a bar cart that you can roll around to various areas of the house when you feel like a change. For some added oomph factor, consider twisting some fairy lights around the display – perfect for when the holidays roll around.
Garden wall boxes
Garden wall boxes are also a terrific option for homes with small floor spaces, as they allow you to make the most of your empty wall space and provide an interesting viewpoint at eye level. Vertical gardens can be created using wooden garden wall boxes, or through wire mesh frames if you’re thinking of incorporating flowering vines. Both indoor gardening options require a little bit of DIY, though garden boxes may require a little more elbow grease. Air plants and succulents are the perfect choice for vertical gardens, but herbs and ferns will fare well too.
