February Planting & Garden Guide

February is a great time to get some crops planted into your vegetable garden. With Southeast Queensland’s warm weather and occasional rain, the conditions are ideal for a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Remember to avoid planting the same crops in the same spot year after year to reduce the risk of soil-borne diseases.  Here’s a guide to what you can plant this month, along with tips on how to care for them.

Vegetables to Plant

  1. Beans (Bush and Climbing)
Beans are a staple in any garden as they are quick-growing and productive. Plant seeds directly in well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist and harvest regularly to encourage more growth.
  2. Carrots
They are versatile in the kitchen and easy to grow. Sow seeds in loose, sandy soil. Water consistently and thin out seedlings to allow roots to develop properly.
  3. Broccoli
A cool-season crop able to be planted in February. Plant seedlings in full sun and keep the soil moist.
  4. Lettuce
Great for continuous harvesting and fast-growing. Choose a semi-shaded spot and plant several each week for a longer harvest. Water regularly to prevent bitterness and pick leaves as needed.
  5. Pumpkin
It’s a long-season crop that thrives in the Queensland climate. Plant seeds in a sunny spot, but make sure there is enough room for the vines to sprawl. Keep the soil moist.

Fruits to Plant

  1. Watermelon
They love the summer heat while growing. Plant seeds in well-drained soil and ensure they get plenty of sunlight.
  2. Passionfruit
A perennial vine that produces delicious fruit. Plant in a sunny spot with a sturdy trellis for support. Fertilise regularly and keep soil well-drained.

Herbs to Plant

  1. Coriander
A herb that is very divisive for some people, but quite versatile. Plant in a semi-shaded area, water consistently and harvest leaves early.
  2. Parsley
A handy year-round herb. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot. Water regularly and remove any flower stems to prolong the growing season.
  3. Mint
This herb is ideal for teas, desserts and savoury dishes. Grow in a container to stop it spreading. Place in a shaded spot and keep the soil consistently moist.
